You Think You’ve Planned the Home Makeover? Think Again

photo 26The paint on the wall has started to look dull. And those cushions don’t exactly go well with the curtains. Maybe it’s time for a makeover. But changing the décor of the home isn’t that easy. There is a lot of hard work involved, and no matter how much you plan your budget, there will be cost overruns. Did you estimate the costs of all the biggest and most expensive pieces of decoration carefully? Rewind everything for a moment. You calculated the furniture costs. What about the cushions? And what about the gas prices for the trips that you make to the store? You never estimated the cost of those smaller things that look ‘not so important’ from the outside. They are the culprits!

Things like cushions and pillows do not cost a lot in Southern California, so maybe you’re planning to buy them later from the leftover money after you’re done with more expensive things like beds or couches. But that’s a bad idea. You need to allocate budget for these little things right from the start. Research what’s available in the market or simply allocate a minimum budget for these things… But don’t neglect them completely. We have enlisted a few things people usually overlook while planning to decorate (the estimated prices are derived after researching the Southern California market).

Rugs – A single 8 x 10 foot rug will cost you a minimum of $250. Opt for a combination of rugs for different areas of the house.

Pillows and Cushions – Decorative pillows cost around $50 per pillow. Do not buy those extra large pillows, as they cost more and are not all that comfortable.

Curtain Panels – They’ll cost around $50 per panel. Line-up the panels yourself and save money.

Lighting and Lighting Accessories – A table lamp costs around $80 and a pendant light around $150-$170. If you want a chandelier, you need to shell out around $250. Search for lamps and accessories online, and you can get great deals.

Art – A typical wall art will cost you around $150-$250.

These costs have been calculated according to the Southern California market. Make sure you allocate a place for them in your budget.
